Where it is

ThermalsSoaringCross-countryHike & fly

Elk Mountain has been hiked and flown for twenty-five years above British Columbia's Fraser Valley, launching from an alpine meadow at 1,440 m that faces southeast through southwest — an angle good enough to suit everyone from beginners to expert pilots. The site flies nearly year-round: even when snow covers the upper slopes, it typically stays launchable from November through April, and it's a common stop for pilots stringing together cross-country flights across the wider Fraser Valley network of sites. Reaching the trailhead means driving Highway 1 to Exit 123, then a run of local roads that turns to gravel forest-service road for the final stretch, ending at a gravel pit parking area; the hike up from there takes one to two hours depending on snow, fitness and how far a vehicle can push. Landing options are mostly private fields around Ryder Lake and the Fraser Valley — a local pilot briefing beforehand is genuinely worth having, since Ryder Lake's landing can turn turbulent on spring and summer afternoons, while the smoother Fraser Valley option means a longer glide when inflow winds are blowing.

Launch & conditions

Alpine meadow launch at 1,440 m facing southeast through southwest — a good angle for beginners through expert pilots.

Getting there & local rules

From Highway 1, take Exit 123 (Prest Road) south 4 km to Bailey Road, turn left 1 km to the bottom of the hill, then right and uphill on Elk View Road for 8 km. The pavement ends and continues 2 km as the Chilliwack Bench Forest Service Road to a gravel pit parking area; the hike from there takes one to two hours depending on conditions.

Local rules & hazards

Airspace ceiling here is 2,400 m. Alpine weather can turn quickly and winds can get very strong, so check conditions thoroughly before committing to the hike up.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Elk Mountain, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Elk Mountain with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
