Where it is

Soaring

Fox River is a small southwest-facing coastal ridge site on Nova Scotia's Bay of Fundy shore, launching from just 13 m where a purpose-shaped earthen slope channels clean airflow into the ridge for both hang gliders and paragliders. From Parrsboro, Highway 209 leads about 14 km to Fox River; watch for Hatfield Road on the left, then a sharp right at the top of Fox River Hill onto a dirt road that runs about a kilometer to the site — the access road runs alongside an open field that pilots are asked to stay off. Flying is informal but requires HPAC insurance, and local club involvement is the norm. The beach below is mostly clear at most tide levels and serves as the main hang-glider landing, while paragliders more often choose to top-land back at the launch shelf, staying close to the ramp to avoid rotor at the rear of the setup area. Getting back up from the beach means either the rope on the bank east of launch or a short walk to the road about 200 m east — never the bank directly in front of launch, which erodes badly. The blueberry field beside launch is strictly off-limits for landing.

Launch & conditions

A manufactured earthen slope channels clean airflow into the SW-facing ridge for inflation and launch, with the setup area just behind the top of the slope.

Getting there & local rules

From Parrsboro, take Highway 209 about 14 km to Fox River, turn onto Hatfield Road, then take a sharp right at the top of Fox River Hill onto the dirt road, following it about 1 km to the site — stay off the open field alongside the access road.

Local rules & hazards

Flying here is informal but requires HPAC insurance and is normally done through the local club. Never climb the bank directly in front of launch — it's highly prone to erosion; use the rope on the bank to the east, or walk the 200 m to the road instead.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Fox River, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Fox River with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
