Mont – Megantic

Mont-Mégantic is a cliff launch in Quebec's Eastern Townships, set below the antenna masts near the mountain's observatory. It is a one-at-a-time takeoff — there is room to set up five or six wings, but only one can launch — and in light wind paragliders may need to build up speed on the run beneath the guy wires. It faces the northeast quadrant and works for thermals, ridge soaring and cross-country, with a hike-in option. The distances matter here more than at most sites: the first open field is well over a kilometre from launch and the official landing is further still, so height management is the whole flight. Access is formal rather than casual, with membership, paperwork and a companion all required before you fly, and the mountain is closed to flying in winter for a reason that becomes obvious when you look up at the masts.

Getting there & local rules

Head for Notre-Dame-des-Bois and follow the signs for the mountain park's observatory sector. From Montreal that means Highway 10 east to exit 143, Route 112 east, then Route 253 south to Cookshire and Route 212 east. From Quebec City, Highway 73 and Route 173 south to Saint-Georges, Route 204 west to Lac-Mégantic, Route 161 south to Woburn and Route 212 west.

Local rules & hazards

A valid national hang gliding and paragliding association membership is mandatory, you must sign a liability release at the park office, and you must be accompanied — a non-flying partner counts. Flying is not allowed in winter because of the risk of ice falling from the antenna guy wires. The first open field is about 1.5 km south of launch and the official landing about 2.5 km, so make sure you have the height to reach it: a northeast wind pushes you that way while a southeast wind can hold you back. Do not land in crops.
