Where it is

ThermalsSoaringCross-countryHike & fly

Vista Mountain rises above Whitehorse in Canada's Yukon, launching at 979 m after a scenic hike that pilots say is well worth the effort. The site has real cross-country pedigree — a flight over 90 km has been flown from here, with routes running north toward Lake Laberge, south back to Cousin's Airstrip, or west toward Haines Junction, which holds the site's longest recorded flight. Reaching launch means driving north out of Whitehorse on the Klondike Highway, turning onto Vista Road and following it up to the radio tower to park, then hiking a cutline across Ta'an Kwäch'än Council settlement land — about 45 to 60 minutes in summer, longer in spring when snowshoes are needed. The area sees turbulence from fixed-wing traffic and sits along a flight path used by local air services, so an air-band radio is worth carrying, and mountain weather here can build quickly. Landing options are plentiful, with open fields and real cross-country potential, though it's worth checking with local pilots first — most farmers are friendly about it and everyone wants to keep it that way. Burma Road has a dedicated landing zone with retrieval-vehicle parking, but watch for smaller power lines there, especially with the sun low.

Launch & conditions

From the radio tower, hike back down the road about two minutes to the trailhead, then follow the cutline across the settlement land to launch — roughly 45 to 60 minutes in summer, longer in spring with snowshoes.

Getting there & local rules

Head north out of Whitehorse on the Klondike Highway, turn onto Vista Road, and follow it up to the radio tower to park.

Local rules & hazards

This can be a turbulent area for fixed-wing traffic and sits along a flight path used by local air services, so carrying an air-band radio is recommended. Weather here can develop quickly, so keep an eye on conditions.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Vista Mountain, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Vista Mountain with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
