Where it is
Niderwiler Stierenberg sits at 1,160 m on the Balmberg ridge above Solothurn, Switzerland, with a single reliable wind direction: southeast. That narrows the flyable window, but it also makes the site predictable — pilots who know the ridge treat it as the steadier alternative to nearby Weissenstein whenever the wind carries too much easterly component for that site to work well. The launch sits about 100 m past the Stierenberg mountain restaurant, reached by a short walk east along a gravel ridge track from the Balmberg summit, itself accessible by bus from Solothurn's main station or by car. Once airborne, the site supports thermalling, ridge soaring and cross-country routes over relatively open, flatland-adjacent terrain. Airspace here needs real attention: Grenchen airport's control zone sits close by and must be avoided, and Basel's Tango airspace is another factor to track — when in doubt, staying below roughly 1,750 m ASL keeps you clear of the complications above. As with anywhere along this ridge, check current airspace status before you fly rather than relying on memory.
Launch & conditions
Launch is about 100 m past the Stierenberg mountain restaurant, along a short gravel ridge track.
Getting there & local rules
Reach the Balmberg summit by bus from Solothurn's main station or by car to the Balmberg Kurhaus, then walk east along the ridge to launch.
Local rules & hazards
Airspace demands attention here: stay clear of Grenchen airport's control zone and be aware of Basel's Tango airspace — when in doubt, stay below about 1,750 m ASL. The site favours southeast wind and is less affected by an easterly component than nearby Weissenstein, making it a useful alternative when that site is blown out.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Niderwiler Stierenberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Niderwiler Stierenberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
