Where it is

Soaring

Somtgant, above Savognin in Switzerland's Graubünden region, is a soaring site at 2,259 m reached by chairlift from the village followed by a short walk to takeoff — a launch that works in both summer and winter. Wind arrives from a wide arc, from north through northeast, east, west and northwest, giving good flexibility across a flying day. Local pilots rate it best in Bise conditions and warn against flying at all when Föhn is blowing, since that wind brings turbulent, gusty air down off the mountains. Landing is south of the tennis courts; in summer, keep off the high grass rather than trampling it, and in winter there's an additional landing zone near the chairlift's valley station. Swiss airspace around Somtgant is genuinely complicated, so check the current airspace picture and any active restrictions before you fly rather than guessing.

Launch & conditions

Reached by chairlift from Savognin followed by a short walk to takeoff; usable in both summer and winter.

Getting there & local rules

Take the chairlift up from Savognin to Somtgant, then walk a few minutes to the launch. Landing is south of the tennis courts — avoid the high grass in summer; a separate landing zone near the chairlift's valley station is used in winter.

Local rules & hazards

Somtgant flies best in Bise wind and should not be flown in Föhn conditions, which bring dangerous, gusty downslope air. Swiss airspace here is complex, so check current airspace and any restrictions before you fly.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Somtgant (Savognin), read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch.
