Where it is

Bad Salzig (Boppard–Weiler) is explicitly for very experienced pilots only — a B-licence is required to fly here, and a briefing from an authorised person is mandatory before your first flight. The site can be flown year-round, but with real restrictions: the valley of the Salziger Bach is off-limits in March and April, the nature reserve Hintere Dick–Eisenbolz just north of the launch must be overflown at a minimum of 300 m above the ground, and — to protect nesting peregrine falcons and eagle owls — the Rhine slopes between Kamp-Bornhofen and Hirzenach, on both sides of the river, must never be overflown. Every launching pilot has to be shown the map and conditions covering these limits. Launches only happen with at least 10 km/h of headwind, and hang glider launches aren't permitted here at all — paragliders only. Pilots need to respect minimum horizontal and vertical clearances from nearby roads throughout the flight.

Launch & conditions

Launch for north through east wind at about 385 m, with at least 10 km/h headwind required. Paragliders only — hang glider launches aren't permitted here.

To protect nesting peregrine falcons and eagle owls, the Rhine slopes between Kamp-Bornhofen and Hirzenach, on both sides of the river, must never be overflown. Keep minimum horizontal and vertical clearance from nearby roads throughout the flight.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch.
