Where it is

Gedeonseck sits high above the Rhine gorge near Boppard, one of Germany's most photographed river bends, and it flies as dramatically as it looks. The takeoff is cliff-like with essentially no way to abort once committed, which is why only experienced, B-licence-rated pilots use it. Wind comes in cleanly from the northeast through southeast, funnelled by the steep vineyard terraces that drop straight to the water 280 m below. Access runs through a local club, and numbers on the hill are capped to keep the launch manageable. The reward is the view: the Rhine curling beneath you, the vineyards, and Boppard's rooftops laid out like a map. This is not a first-flight site — the terrain punishes hesitation — but for a pilot with the rating and the currency to handle it, Gedeonseck offers one of the most striking short flights on the Middle Rhine.

Launch & conditions

Cliff-style launch with no realistic way to abort once you commit — mandatory briefing on site covers hill- and top-landing technique before your first flight here.

Getting there & local rules

The site is restricted to club members and pilot numbers are capped each day; check in with the local airspace supervisor before flying.

Local rules & hazards

Only pilots with solid experience should launch here, and a mandatory on-site briefing covers hazards like top- and hill-landings before the first flight. If you lose more than 30 m of height after launching, head straight for a landing area rather than risking an outlanding, and cross the Rhine with a safe minimum altitude — an altimeter is required kit. Tandem launches need at least 10 km/h of headwind, and pilots must stay at least 50 m clear of the railway line below.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Gedeonseck / Boppard, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Gedeonseck / Boppard with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
