Where it is

Breitenberg Startplatz Stütze 9 launches from 1,580 m in the Allgäu Alps, reached by cable car, on wind from the north, north-east or east — a popular spring choice when the east wind is running. The Breitenberg isn't a very easy site: its launches are properly alpine, and reading the wind correctly on site matters, though it's a calmer, more relaxed mountain overall than the tougher Tegelberg next door. This particular launch sits just below the main Kesselmoos takeoff, on the same alpine meadow with its scattered stones and cattle track, and from around midday the wind here often swings north. Getting up the mountain means the Breitenberg cable car and a chairlift, and the operator only lets pilots aboard after they show a valid licence and proof of insurance — a minimum 50 m distance from the cableway itself has to be kept at all times once you're flying. In föhn conditions, a red flag goes up locally whenever the pressure difference passes 4 hPa, a signal to think seriously about not flying.

Launch & conditions

The cable car only carries pilots who can show a valid flight licence and proof of insurance, and once airborne you need to keep at least 50 m clear of the cableway at all times. From midday, expect the wind here to swing north.

Local rules & hazards

The Breitenberg is not a very easy site — launches are properly alpine and reading the on-site wind matters, though it's calmer overall than the neighbouring Tegelberg. Flying under the cable car operator's rules requires a valid licence, liability insurance (with passenger cover for tandem pilots), a briefing card, a logged flight-book entry, and — in föhn conditions — real caution once the pressure difference passes 4 hPa.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Breitenberg Startplatz Stütze 9, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch.
