Where it is
Dernbach's north training slope is a short, 39 m hop built for the coordinated teaching a flying school runs here — you fly it by prior arrangement with the school, not on your own. Wind favours north through northwest, and the rules exist to keep first flights safe and predictable: launches wait for turning flight to be under control, no launching into crosswind or lee off the opposite slope, and the field track below has to be clear of cyclists and farm traffic before anyone goes. The surrounding meadows sit under nature-conservation management, mown at most twice a year and left uncut through much of high summer to protect what grows there, and a stand of tall fruit trees on the school's own land is deliberately kept and replanted over time. It's a low-key, low-consequence hill built entirely around structured instruction rather than free flying.
Launch & conditions
Launches wait until turning flight is reliably under control, and crosswind or lee-side launches off the opposite slope are ruled out.
Getting there & local rules
Flying here is by arrangement with the local flying school only — this is a training slope, not a free-fly hill.
Local rules & hazards
This is a supervised training slope: launches happen only once turning flight is under control, and crosswind or lee-side launches off the opposite hill aren't allowed. The field track below must be clear of cyclists and farm traffic before anyone launches. The surrounding meadows are under nature-conservation management — mown at most twice a year, with cutting banned for part of each summer to protect what grows there.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Dernbach Nord Übungshang Start, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Dernbach Nord Übungshang Start with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
