Where it is

Hauchenberg's takeoff sits in a forest clearing at about 1,240 m, facing north, and flying here only happens by arrangement with the site holder — though guest pilots are genuinely welcome once that's sorted. Two conditions shape when you can actually fly it. First, launching is off the table whenever an east wind risks turbulence in the clearing — the terrain that makes the north-facing launch clean also makes it turbulence-prone from the wrong direction. Second, training flights are only permitted in a clear, unambiguous north wind, and only after a hazard briefing — this isn't a site for a student to figure out on the fly. Beyond wind, there's a fixed safety requirement: a proper distance has to be kept from the road running between the neighbouring plots, from the farm access south of it, and from the buildings nearby. It's a workable site with a good landing setup, but one that rewards checking in with the site holder and reading the wind carefully before committing to launch.

Local rules & hazards

Do not launch when an east wind risks turbulence in the forest-clearing takeoff. Training flights are permitted only in a clear north wind and only after a hazard briefing. Keep a safety distance from the nearby road, the farm access south of it, and adjacent buildings.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Hauchenberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Hauchenberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
