Where it is

Heisterberg is a modest paragliding launch in the Sauerland hills of Kreis Olpe, North Rhine-Westphalia, sitting at about 600 m and flyable in a southwest wind only — there's no backup direction if the forecast shifts. A dedicated landing field, Heisterberg Landeplatz, serves pilots coming down from the ridge. The site is currently affected by a swine-fever control zone declared by the district authorities in October 2025 (see local rules below), so it's worth confirming the flying status before you travel. Outside of that, it's a small, single-direction hill site suited to pilots comfortable reading a narrow wind window rather than to a first flying trip: no vehicle access to launch, seasonal time restrictions to protect breeding wildlife, and no powered paragliders. Check with a local school or the DHV for a current briefing before flying here for the first time.

Launch & conditions

Launch works in southwest wind only, at about 600 m; there's no fallback direction if the wind swings. A tandem launch needs at least 10 km/h of headwind, and a windsock is required directly below the launch line so pilots read true wind, not funnelled gusts.

Getting there & local rules

There's no vehicle access to launch — gear and pilots go up on foot, per the site rules. The dedicated landing field, Heisterberg Landeplatz, is downhill from take-off.

Local rules & hazards

As of October 2025, local authorities suspended flying here because the area sits inside an African swine fever control zone — check current status with the DHV or local club before visiting, since this kind of restriction lifts once the outbreak clears. Between 1 April and 30 June, flying may not start before 10:00 to protect wildlife, and powered paragliders are not permitted at all.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Heisterberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Heisterberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
