Where it is
Schalldorf is a winch-launch flatland site in Lower Bavaria, set up for east or west wind at around 476 m above sea level. Launches here use an electric-powered tow rather than a car winch, and landings are always made with the drive switched off — a detail that shapes how the whole session runs. Flying is only possible by prior arrangement with the landowner, so this isn't a drop-in site; check with the local pilots before heading out. The village of Schalldorf itself sits close to the field, and pilots are expected to keep clear of it and of the nearby road during takeoff, climb-out, approach and landing. In west wind, the tree line at the site's edge can throw turbulent, sheltered air across part of the field, so launch and landing lines need to be planned around it rather than straight through it.
Launch & conditions
Electric-powered winch launch, suited to east or west wind; landings are always made with the drive switched off, and flying requires prior arrangement with the landowner.
Getting there & local rules
A private site near the village of Schalldorf in Lower Bavaria — arrange access with the landowner before flying rather than turning up unannounced.
Local rules & hazards
Keep at least 50 m horizontally and vertically from the road during takeoff, approach and landing, and don't overfly the village of Schalldorf on climb-out or approach. No flying is allowed during the bird breeding season, 15 March to 30 June. In west wind, plan launch and landing lines around the lee turbulence off the tree line at the field's edge.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Schalldorf, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Schalldorf with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
