Where it is

Sommerberg is a hill launch in the Regental area of Bavaria, Germany, at about 800 m, flown by the local paragliding club for decades and facing west to catch a southwest wind. The launch sits in a cleared lane through the trees rather than an open bowl, which makes the site less forgiving than a wide-open hill: pilots need to line up cleanly with that lane rather than drifting off to one side. Any crosswind on launch is a real hazard here — the terrain around a narrow cleared strip tends to funnel and turn turbulent when the wind isn't straight down the lane, so a side wind is a reason to wait, not push through. Because of that terrain sensitivity, visiting pilots are expected to get shown the site by a club member before their first flight rather than figuring it out alone, and to walk around rather than across the surrounding meadows out of respect for the land. It's a site for pilots comfortable reading a tight launch and judging wind direction precisely, not a casual drop-in hill.

Launch & conditions

Launch faces west, in a cleared lane through the trees rather than an open bowl. Never launch in crosswind — the lane funnels and turns turbulent when the wind isn't straight down it. First-time visitors should be shown the site by a club member before flying.

Getting there & local rules

Walk around the surrounding meadows rather than across them.

Local rules & hazards

The launch is in a narrow cleared lane through trees, which makes crosswind genuinely dangerous — wait for the wind to line up straight down the lane rather than launching across it.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Sommerberg, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Sommerberg with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
