Where it is
Hauptgipfel is the highest of the Wallberg's paragliding launches above the Tegernsee, at around 1,720 m right at the summit, and it comes into play in northwest wind. It shares the mountain's reputation as a strong cross-country launch — pilots regularly head toward Kössen via Bodenschneid, Bayerischzell and Kufstein, and in north wind some continue over the Blauberge to the Achensee and on into the Zillertal, a route that needs a high base because of the forest below. Because it sits above the other two Wallberg launches, pilots read the summit windsocks directly at takeoff rather than judging lee risk from a distance, and switch to a lower launch if conditions turn against the wind here. Landing is north of the Wallbergstraße road, where flying low risks hitting a parked or moving car. Golden eagles nest on the mountain, so their nesting areas are avoided, and a day permit purchased at the cable-car station covers the site's upkeep.
Launch & conditions
The highest of the three Wallberg launches, working in northwest wind. Read the summit windsocks directly at takeoff, and switch to a lower launch if the wind turns against this one.
Getting there & local rules
A day permit, bought at the cable-car station, covers site upkeep.
Local rules & hazards
Golden eagles nest on the Wallberg, so nesting areas are avoided. Landing is north of the Wallbergstraße road — flying low over it risks a collision with cars — and lee conditions at this summit launch are judged directly from the windsocks here rather than from a distance.
