Where it is
Kircherl is the main paragliding launch on the Wallberg above the Tegernsee, just west of the upper cable-car station. Good soaring and thermal conditions run through wind from west round to north, and the ridge gets busy whenever the weather cooperates. The Wallberg is a well-known cross-country starting point: flights toward Kössen via Bodenschneid, Bayerischzell and Kufstein are common, and in north wind some pilots continue over the Blauberge to the Achensee and into the Zillertal, though that route needs a high base since it crosses a lot of forest. Launching is only permitted below the path running past the site, and pilots check the summit windsocks first, since lee conditions show up there before they're obvious at the launch. Landing is north of the Wallbergstraße road — flying low over the road risks a collision with parked or moving cars. Golden eagles nest on the mountain, so nesting areas are avoided, and a day permit bought at the cable-car station covers the site's upkeep.
Launch & conditions
This is the main Wallberg launch, good in wind from west round to north. Launch only below the path, and check the summit windsocks first — lee shows up there before it's obvious at the launch. In west-to-southwest wind, pilots switch to the higher 'Alm' launch above the upper station instead.
Getting there & local rules
A day permit, bought at the cable-car station, covers site upkeep.
Local rules & hazards
Golden eagles nest on the Wallberg, so nesting areas are avoided. Landing is north of the Wallbergstraße road; flying low over the road risks a collision with parked or moving cars, and lee rotors can form at the summit in the wrong wind — check the windsocks before launching.
Check conditions before you fly
