Where it is

ThermalsCross-countryHike & flyFlatland XC

Canaldá is a remote, serious cross-country site in the Pre-Pyrenees of Lleida province, Catalonia, launching from around 1,508 m — thermals here run genuinely strong, strong enough that the site hosted both the Spanish and Catalan paragliding championships in 2007. The takeoff is a gentle meadow, but there's a technique to it: you can't launch straight south, so the plan is to turn sharply toward the west immediately after lift-off. Getting there is by car, along the secondary L-401 road between Sant Llorenç de Morunys and Coll de Nargó. Wind works from southeast through south, southwest and west. Top-landing is the preferred option; if you do land in the valley, the large meadows directly below launch are farmland, so keep clear of the farmhouse and steer well away from the falconry nearby. On approach, stay to the east side of the field, since drifting over the eastern end puts you against a steep hillside.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Canaldá, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Canaldá with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
