Where it is

Castala is a soaring site in Granada province, Spain, at 1,198 m, working on south and southwest wind. It's a technical site rather than a beginner one — the takeoff is a small plateau where reverse-launch skills are specifically recommended. The access road doesn't help: it's a rough, dusty dirt-and-rock track where a scratched vehicle underbody is a normal outcome, not bad luck. Castala earns its keep on days when northerly, foehn-like winds shut down other sites in the region — it becomes the go-to option then — but that same foehn character means the wind can break through unpredictably, so treat forecasts with caution. Landing is easy in principle but rough underfoot, with broken glass littering parts of the terrain; top-landing is possible on or beside the road just above takeoff, though tricky, since the grass there hides small loose rocks.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Castala, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Castala with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
