Where it is

Soaring

La Muela launches at 950 m near Guadalajara, in central Spain, and stands out for flying with wind from every direction, north through east, south and west and everything in between, which is unusual and makes it flyable across a genuinely wide range of days. It's a very popular ridge-soaring site as a result, and that popularity has a real consequence: expect it to get crowded on weekends, with plenty of other wings sharing the same ridge lift. Getting there means taking the A-2 or R-2 motorway from Madrid toward Guadalajara, exiting toward Humanes; past Humanes you'll spot a lone small mountain, and from there the route continues to the village of Alarilla and up the road to takeoff. Because it works all day and in any wind direction, it's a dependable go-to site rather than one you have to time carefully, though on a busy weekend, good airmanship around other pilots matters as much as the flying itself.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to La Muela, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch.
