Where it is
Peña Rubia is a solid cross-country launch near Villena, on the Alicante–Madrid highway in eastern Spain, at around 872 m — head out toward the eastern hills and follow the ridgeline for the best XC. The flight area sits below a 300 m AGL ceiling, so keeping track of your height above ground matters as much as the flying itself. Takeoff is on part of a protected mountain, which means it stays rough and can't be cleaned up or maintained — come prepared for uneven ground underfoot. Late afternoon is when the wind tends to pick up quickly, and especially in spring and summer, a breeze can start sneaking in from behind the ridge — within 15 minutes you can end up flying in the lee without realizing it, so keep checking conditions rather than assuming they'll hold. Landing is in a large field to the right of the ridge, but watch closely for cables — there are several, and they're a real hazard on approach. As with any site inside a protected area, flying respectfully here is what keeps access open for everyone who comes after.

Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Pena Rubia, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Pena Rubia with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
