Where it is

Roque de los Muchachos is a high-altitude launch on La Palma in Spain's Canary Islands, taking off from around 2,113 m with west and northwest winds. It's a serious undertaking before you even fly: there's no vehicle track to launch, so pilots hike up from the end of the road, and the climb is steep, unmarked and takes at least an hour. The first 500 m of the flight itself stays notably flat, so you need genuinely optimal launch conditions to get away cleanly rather than sink out early. The site sits inside a national park, and pilots must respect the no-fly zone — don't enter or overfly the Caldera before reaching Torre del Time. Cloud is a real factor here too: the summit is frequently in or above cloud, and many local pilots keep the Puntagorda launch in mind as a lower-altitude alternative when conditions are socked in. This is a launch for prepared, patient pilots — the hike, the flat first stretch and the airspace rule all demand it — but the altitude and volcanic scenery make it a standout when the day lines up.
