Where it is
La Seranne - Deco Roc Blanc launches at about 903 m in the Herault department of southern France, north of Montpellier toward Ganges, and is rated one of the best sites in the region for cross-country flying. There are separate takeoffs for paragliding and hang gliding, taking wind from north, south-east, south, south-west and north-west. Getting there means turning off toward Cazilhac-Le-Haut and following a dirt track for about 40 minutes, or walking up via the road or one of several footpaths in roughly 1 to 1.5 hours depending on fitness. A maximum altitude of 3,500 m QNH applies at weekends, so keep that ceiling in mind on busy days. North and north-west winds are flyable but can strengthen suddenly, so pilots monitor a local radio channel for live wind updates. Two rules protect both pilots and wildlife: keep a safe altitude margin and never pass below the landmark statue on the ridge, since doing so makes it very hard to get back to the official landing, and avoid descending into the valley at Saint-Jean-de-Bueges, a raptor protection zone — staying close to the ridge is the safest strategy.
Launch & conditions
There are separate takeoffs for paragliding and hang gliding, facing north, south-east, south, south-west or north-west depending on the day's wind. A maximum altitude of 3,500 m QNH applies at weekends.
Getting there & local rules
From Montpellier, head toward Ganges and turn off at Cazilhac-Le-Haut, then follow a dirt track for about 40 minutes. Walking up is also possible, via the road or one of several footpaths, taking roughly 1 to 1.5 hours depending on fitness.
Local rules & hazards
Keep a solid altitude margin and never pass below the landmark statue on the ridge - doing so makes it very hard to get back to the official landing. Avoid descending into the valley at Saint-Jean-de-Bueges, a protected raptor zone, and stay close to the ridge instead; north and north-west winds are flyable but can strengthen suddenly, so check current conditions before committing, and note the 3,500 m QNH altitude cap that applies at weekends.
