Where it is

ThermalsSoaring

Roc des Grenouilles launches from 916 m in the Pyrénées foothills of Ariège, southern France, on the road between the village of Bélesta and the Pays de Sault plateau, and favours wind from the north to northwest for a mix of ridge soaring and thermal flying. Access follows a specific, slightly hidden route: from Bélesta, drive toward Camurac and Roquefeuil, and after the village the road climbs; the first house on the left past a bridge is known locally as 'le Prince' — turn there and take the track signed toward the television relay, ending on a dirt road with a fence to open before reaching the launch. It's the kind of directions-first site where a wrong turn is easy on a first visit, so following the route carefully matters more than it does at better-signposted launches. Landing is beside the road toward Puivert, just before the Col del Teil, in a private parking area at the bottom of the valley. Given how little is documented about this launch beyond the approach itself, pilots visiting for the first time are better off confirming current conditions and any local flying customs with pilots who already know the site.

Getting there & local rules

From Bélesta, head toward Camurac and Roquefeuil; after the village, the road climbs. Turn at the first house past a bridge (known locally as 'le Prince'), following signs toward the TV relay, and open the fence at the end of the track to reach the launch.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to roc des grenouilles, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open roc des grenouilles with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
