Madonnina Capo di Serra, better known locally as Bacheca, is one of the most scenic takeoffs in the central Apennines, sitting in the territory of Villa Santa Lucia in Abruzzo at around 1,508 m with a west/southwest exposure. The launch itself is part of a wide glade framed by dense beech forest. It's primarily a winter site, flown from October to March on high-pressure days with weak to moderate west or southwest wind — often around the passage of Atlantic weather fronts. The valley's broad, flat shape traps strong sunlight and builds powerful thermals, which is exactly why the site is not recommended in summer and is best suited to experienced pilots. Takeoff is reached via a long dirt road that regular cars can manage during the summer months, and the landing areas below are wide and flat.
