Monte Soglio

Monte Soglio stands at 1,954 m on the ridge above the Val Chiusella in Piedmont, and it is one of the least crowded but most rewarding launches in the Western Alps. Facing east through south-west, it picks up morning slope thermals well and feeds into the long afternoon convergence lines running out over the Canavese. The setting is pure high alpine — pasture, rock and silence — and on the clearest days the view reaches all the way to the Maritime Alps. This is not a site for a first flight or a tandem ride. The altitude, the complete absence of infrastructure and the long walk in all ask for a self-sufficient pilot who is fit and reads high-mountain air well. The launch is a grass slope that needs laying out carefully, and the valley-floor landing rewards precise navigation. Conditions are best from June to September, once the snow has gone and the thermals turn consistent.

Landing is in the meadows on the valley floor; check which fields are clear before committing to one. Retrieve is awkward without a support vehicle.

Local rules & hazards

High mountain conditions: weigh the forecast wind seriously before starting the walk up, because the saddle can channel it and change character fast. Phone coverage drops out on parts of the ridge, so carry a radio or a rescue beacon.
