Where it is

ThermalsCross-countryHike & fly

Monticchio sits in a pocket that's unusually well protected from northern wind, staying flyable on days when nearby sites have shut down — though that's exactly the kind of condition that calls for real caution, and checking with local pilots before committing is worth the extra step. The take-off itself is enormous, with room for thousands of gliders and a launch line that works pretty much anywhere along it; it's not especially steep, though, which rules it out for hang gliders or older, low-efficiency wings. Getting to launch is easy — a good asphalted road reaches it directly by car, though there's no shuttle service. Foehn wind is the one condition to avoid outright here, since it turns the air extremely turbulent and genuinely dangerous. There's currently no windsock at the landing, but the pattern normally lands toward the south, except on very early morning or very late evening flights, when the wind can swing around from the north instead.

Local rules & hazards

Never fly with a foehn wind here — conditions turn extremely turbulent and dangerous. The site stays flyable in some north-wind conditions when nearby sites shut down, but treat that with real caution and check with local pilots first. There's currently no windsock; landings are normally toward the south, except on very early or very late flights when the wind can swing from the north.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Monticchio, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Monticchio with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
