Norma

Norma sits above the Pontine plain south-east of Rome, on the edge of the ruins of the ancient city of Norba. It's a year-round site with a large, safe south-west launch and an easy top-landing area, and thanks to its Mediterranean exposure, warm thermal days are not unusual even in November to February. The setting is exceptional — you fly out from an archaeological site, so treating the area with real respect (no litter, no damage to finds or vegetation) is part of the pact that keeps the site open. Every wind direction is workable except east and south-east, which are dangerous here. Hang-glider pilots have a dedicated ramp at nearby Monte Arestino between Norma and Cori.

Launch & conditions

Very large, easy south-west facing launch with a big safe top-landing area. All wind directions work or are acceptable EXCEPT east and south-east, which are dangerous. Expect a strong breeze in the middle hours of the day.

Getting there & local rules

A1 Roma–Napoli: from the north exit Valmontone via Artena – Giulianello – Cori – Doganella – Norma; from the south exit Frosinone via Priverno – Sezze – Latina Scalo – Norma. Or the SS148 Pontina via the Latina Scalo or Borgo Sabotino exits. By rail: Latina Scalo station, then bus or taxi to Norma. Park in the archaeological-site car park and walk 800 m up an easy road to launch.

Local rules & hazards

East and south-east winds are dangerous at launch — do not fly them. Do not fly past the vertical of the Doganella di Ninfa crossroads (around 41°36 N; 12°50 E) — beyond that you enter the Latina Military Airport CTR, and repeat trespasses have put the site at risk of closure. The landing field is reserved for the local flying club.
