La Malinche

La Malinche Flight Park sits at about 2,249 m in the state of Tlaxcala, central Mexico — a rare mountain launch where the intersection of three valleys releases a consistent daily 'house thermal', usable on essentially any wind direction (N, SE, S, SW, W, NW). The result is landing zones in all directions and an extensive network of inexpensive taxis to bring you back. October–November brings gentle thermals to 2,800–3,100 m — beginner-friendly under instruction with 90% of days flyable. December–January turns medium-strong to 2,800–3,800 m, February–March medium-strong to 5,000+ m — 98% flyable most days. The flight park has an on-site pilot's building with two basic hotel rooms, hot/cold water, showers, toilet and a shared kitchen. Pilots new to the site should get a briefing on the multiple landings and XC options before their first flight.

Launch & conditions

The large grass launch is maintained year-round exclusively for paragliding, easily fitting 4–5 gliders. Winds are predictably SW, S and SE. Top-landings are common for local Mexican tandem pilots and pose no problem for intermediate pilots. The Cabanas Piano LZ is NOT recommended for mid-day flights due to a thermal trigger below launch; the Road Piano LZ runs N–S below launch on the right toward the village.

Getting there & local rules

La Malinche is a few kilometres south of Tenancingo on the road to Acatzingo. Taxis from Tenancingo de Degollado reach the launch-road head, which needs 4WD or a strong 2WD to reach the actual launch — otherwise a 20-minute walk. A small daily site-development donation and shuttle-transport fee help maintain the site. Pilots typically meet at Casa del Piloto in Tenancingo.

Local rules & hazards

Air traffic is very rare. Flying is prohibited directly over the rectangular military base 7 km north-east of launch — identifiable by a large Mexican flag at the entrance. Avoid unharvested fields and keep well clear of fields with livestock, especially horses. Summer afternoons bring rain, so plan morning launches in the wet season.
