Where it is
Ixtapan de la Sal is a well-regarded thermal and cross-country site in Mexico State, at 2,431 m, with wind working from southeast through southwest. The takeoff is big, at 450 m of usable ridge, facing south-southeast, and considered a very safe launch — plenty of landing fields sit below it, with road access for vehicle retrieval, which makes it genuinely recommended for pilots of any level. Cross-country routes from here are plentiful, including links out to other flying sites in the region. The site is flyable year-round, with winter — October through March — as the strongest season. Getting there takes about two hours from Mexico City via the road to Toluca and on to Ixtapan. As with most of Mexico's flying sites, formal site regulation is minimal, so the usual airspace and safety judgment calls fall to the pilot rather than a posted rulebook. The local flying community here has a strong reputation for being welcoming to visiting pilots.
