Where it is
Yelapa Tapita is a mellow, straightforward paragliding site near the car-free village of Yelapa, on Mexico's Pacific coast south of Puerto Vallarta. Launch sits low, at 191 m, with a carpeted takeoff under a shade shelter — useful, since thorny brush surrounds the pad and makes an aborted or errant launch unforgiving. Winds typically run light and cross in the morning, straightening out before midday, then build through the afternoon into solid ridge-soaring conditions off the north-facing coast. The whole system runs on the local sea breeze, and while thermals are generally light, they can turn briefly turbulent. Landing is a long sandy beach backed by a lagoon, with bars, restaurants and sunbathers sharing the sand. Getting there is part of the experience: Yelapa has no road access, so pilots arrive by water taxi from Puerto Vallarta and walk up a dirt trail to launch, about 20 minutes on foot.
Launch & conditions
Launch is a carpeted pad with a shade shelter, ringed by thorny brush — an aborted or errant launch here is unforgiving, so commit cleanly. Morning wind is light and often cross, straightening out before noon; it builds through the afternoon into proper ridge-soaring strength.
Getting there & local rules
There are no roads into Yelapa — arrive by water taxi from Puerto Vallarta, then walk the dirt trail up to launch, about 20 minutes on foot.
Local rules & hazards
Flying here carries a small daily fee, with a discounted seasonal membership available locally; there's no established local radio frequency, so coordinate visually with other pilots. Conditions depend entirely on the sea breeze — thermals are usually light but can turn briefly turbulent.
