Where it is
Gunung Jerai is a developing flying site on Malaysia's west coast, currently rated for intermediate and advanced pilots only while facilities are being built out to national aviation standards. Launch sits at 2,200ft, facing northwest, though north and west winds also work; reaching it means driving the single road up the mountain, then walking about ten minutes from the designated parking area. The site carries real airspace structure: VFR flight is capped at 4,000ft within 10km to the north, dropping to 2,500ft further out toward Kota Sarang Semut, and everything beyond that falls under control from the nearest air traffic control at Alor Setar or Butterworth. Landing is 3.5km from launch, next to a restaurant that offers shelter for gear while you wait for a retrieve — allow about 15 minutes to drive back up. Expect the usual tropical pattern of rain and strong wind, so build a weather buffer into any plan here.
Launch & conditions
Launch sits at 2,200ft, facing northwest, though it also works with north or west wind. Reach it by driving the only road up the mountain to the designated parking area, then walking about ten minutes.
Getting there & local rules
From the PLUS highway, take the Gurun/Yan exit; signboards near Guar Cempedak town point the way to Gunung Jerai. By train, get off at Gurun station, right next to the mountain, on the line connecting Thailand and Singapore — check timetables before relying on it. Landing is 3.5km from launch, next to a restaurant with shelter for gear while you wait for your retrieve; the drive back up to launch takes about 15 minutes.
Local rules & hazards
This is a structured airspace: VFR flight tops out at 4,000ft within 10km north of launch, dropping to 2,500ft further out toward Kota Sarang Semut, and everything beyond falls under control from the nearest air traffic control at Alor Setar or Butterworth. Expect rain and strong wind as standard here, so build in a weather margin.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Gunung Jerai, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Gunung Jerai with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
