Where it is
Gunung Raya sits on Langkawi island in Malaysia, a site first tested about a decade ago and only recently developed enough to launch multiple pilots in sequence. The view is spectacular, but the airspace above is anything but relaxed — Langkawi has an international airport, and the rules here are strictly enforced. Flying without prior arrangement isn't an option: pilots need to coordinate flight paths and NOTAM details with a local operator before going up, and unauthorized use of the airspace draws real enforcement from local authorities. Launch faces west but the surrounding terrain is clear enough to also take off in a northwest or southwest wind, reached by a 200 m walk from the car park. Getting to the island means flying into Langkawi International Airport and taking a taxi up, or taking the ferry from Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis to Kuah town and continuing by taxi — the mountain top is also reachable by car, up to the resort near launch. Below, a wide stretch of paddy fields holds a few designated landing zones, though in the dry season it's possible to land almost anywhere across that area. Expect strong winds and rain to be part of the picture here too.
Launch & conditions
Launch faces west at 900 m, though the surrounding terrain is clear enough to also take off in a northwest or southwest wind. It's about a 200 m walk from the car park to launch.
Getting there & local rules
Fly into Langkawi International Airport and taxi up, or take the ferry from Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis to Kuah town and continue by taxi — the mountain top is also reachable by car, up to the resort near launch.
Local rules & hazards
Airspace here is strictly enforced because of Langkawi's international airport — coordinate flight paths and NOTAM details with a local operator before flying; don't walk up and fly without arrangement, as unauthorized use draws real enforcement. Landing zones are designated across the paddy fields below, though in the dry season it's possible to land almost anywhere in that area. Expect strong winds and rain as part of the conditions.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Gunung Raya, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Gunung Raya with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
