Gunung Ledang

Gunung Ledang is a proper mountain site in Peninsular Malaysia's Johor state, with a steep south-east-facing launch at just over 1,000 m and a landing on the plain 70 m above sea level. About 2.5 km of unbroken jungle lies between takeoff and landing on a straight glide, so this is not a beginner site: penetration and honest wind-reading matter here. Best directions are south, south-east and south-west; the ridge is soarable in a solid southerly, and thermal days can carry you far. The site clouds in regularly, especially after mid-morning, so early launches are the way to make the flight happen. Access runs through a national park, with a small entrance toll and a straightforward drive from Kuala Lumpur down the E2 expressway.

Launch & conditions

Steep south-east facing launch at 1,052 m — intermediate pilots and above only. It is on the left of the road, about 80 m up and 2 km before the top of Gunung Ledang.

Getting there & local rules

About 2 hours from Kuala Lumpur south on E2 towards Singapore. Take the Tangkak exit onto Route 23; the Gunung Ledang road is about 2–3 km on the other side of Tangkak (poorly signed — look for a dirt road; if you reach Sagil you've overshot). A national-park entrance toll is collected half way up.

Local rules & hazards

North side of Gunung Ledang is a military no-fly zone — stay off it. Site is not for beginners: strong 15+ km/h SE/S/SW winds make the long jungle glide to landing hard to make, and clouding-in is common (fly early). Wind from the back (N/NW/NE) is flyable only when light; expect strong sink if it picks up.
