Where it is
Pusty Hrad — Desert Castle — launches at 566 m on a hill southeast of Zvolen, Slovakia, and works nearly year-round: the north-to-northwest facing slope holds soaring lift comfortably, and in summer the town below — railway yards, parking areas, buildings and asphalt streets — throws up strong thermals that can carry flights out and over the valley. The best takeoff wind is northwest, though anything from west round to north will get you off the hill; the launch itself is a short, fairly narrow strip of grass, around 30 m long by 100 m wide, on a steep roughly 30° downhill grade. Getting there means a proper hike: from Zvolen's railway station, follow the tracks south, cross the river Hron, then climb the green-marked tourist trail up to the castle ruins. Driving up is possible in theory but only with police permission, so most pilots walk. Landing is flexible, with several fields working in the valley, and pilots have even set down in Zvolen's town-centre pedestrian zone, though the quieter parking area nearby is the more sensible choice.
Launch & conditions
The launch is a short, fairly narrow grass strip — about 30 m long and 100 m wide — on a steep, roughly 30° slope. Northwest is the best wind; anything from west round to north will work.
Getting there & local rules
From Zvolen's railway station, walk south along the tracks, cross the river Hron, then climb the green-marked tourist trail up to the castle. Driving to the top needs police permission, so most pilots hike.
Local rules & hazards
You're required to call Sliač Airport before flying here — the international/military airport lies about 10 km away and sees a lot of air traffic. Beyond that, this site doesn't carry major weather hazards.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Pusty Hrad, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Pusty Hrad with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
