Phu Thap Boek

Phu Thap Boek is a Thai flying site on a 1,582 m mountain in Phetchabun province, historically one of the country's best cross-country venues. The launch faces east through south (N, NE, E, SE, S). As of 2015 the classic launch has been progressively taken over by a small tourist resort's expansion: buildings, posts and fences have appeared through the take-off area and the space has become small and unsafe. A usable adjacent field remains but often requires a full-on forward launch. The situation reflects a breakdown of communication between landowners, local pilots, local government and Thai paragliding officials — a very nice site that is progressively disappearing. This is NOT a beginner site: several serious accidents have occurred and the launch does not forgive mistakes. Speak with local pilots before attempting.

Launch & conditions

The classic launch is now a dusty parking lot with buildings and fences in the way. A small adjacent field is the remaining option, often requiring a proper forward launch in the best conditions. Talk to locals before pulling up here.

A paved road runs to the top; hitchhiking up the mountain is very easy. Follow the standard road access shown on Google maps.

Local rules & hazards

There is an airport 25 km south of launch near Phetchabun town — regulations aren't clearly documented locally, but thermals typically build west of it near the ridge, well clear. Watch for potential storm cells building over launch — leave when you see them. Down in the valley, dust devils can be tricky when they get going. Serious accidents have happened here — this is not a beginner site.
