Where it is
Day Dreams launches from a ridge above Lake Tahoe's north shore, near Kings Beach on the California side, with two separate takeoffs to choose between depending on the day's conditions. The setup area is small and rocky, and punchy thermals tend to roll through launch, so pilots should be ready to actively manage the wing and have reverse-launch technique ready before trying this site. The payoff is one of the more scenic flights in the Tahoe basin, with the lake spread out below — but it comes with real local etiquette to respect. The original beach landing zone was closed by the local parks authority after complaints from beachgoers, so flying here now means landing at the approved alternate beach and folding up quickly rather than lingering on the sand. Best conditions are a steady southwest wind around 10-15 mph. Because the takeoff isn't obvious from the road, first-time visitors are better off finding a local pilot to point them to it.
Launch & conditions
Two separate launches sit on the ridge northeast of Kings Beach State Park. Setup space is small and rocky, and thermals tend to punch through launch, so reverse-launch skills and active piloting are worth having dialed in before flying here.
Getting there & local rules
The takeoff isn't easy to find on your own — new visitors are better off contacting a local pilot for directions before heading up.
Local rules & hazards
Land only at the approved alternate beach — the original main-beach landing zone was closed by the local parks authority after noise complaints, and landing there risks a citation. Expect steady thermic lift in southwest winds around 10-15 mph, with punchy thermals through launch that call for solid active piloting.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Day Dreams, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Day Dreams with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
