Where it is

ThermalsSoaringCross-country

King Mountain, near Arco and Moore in Idaho's high desert, is a serious cross-country and thermal site that's strong and famously hard to predict — first-time visitors are advised to fly with a local instructor as a guide rather than figure it out alone. There are three separate launches at different altitudes: a lower launch and a spot called Coyote, both reachable by a high-clearance 2WD vehicle, and an upper launch that needs 4WD. Getting in has gotten harder in recent years — the old direct route between the landing zones and launch washed out and is no longer passable, so the drive now runs up through Arco and a chain of named passes on a dirt road that turns rough enough to need 4WD and real ground clearance, with over an hour between launch and landing. Expect the classic high-desert package: strong wind, a high cloud base, dust devils and weather that can turn fast, including thunderstorms. Multiple official landing zones sit around the valley, but in the evening pilots are told to avoid the base of the mountain entirely — except at those official LZs — and fly out into the open valley instead.
