Where it is

Soaring

Wolfgat, also known as Macassar, is a coastal soaring site near Cape Town where a little height opens up the whole run of cliffs east toward the tidal pools, with genuinely abundant lift on a good day. There are two ways to launch: a small sandy cliff site that puts you straight into strong lift but leaves a tight landing and vehicles more exposed, or a gentler beach launch off a small dune by the parking lot, with a safer, more generous landing to match. Whichever you choose, launching and landing is only permitted at the designated cliff or beach spots — the area is a breeding ground for sea birds, so respecting those boundaries matters. This is also a well-known crime hotspot, and many local pilots have stopped flying here altogether as a result, so treat parked vehicles and personal safety as a real part of planning a session here, not an afterthought.

Launch & conditions

There are two launch options: a small sandy cliff site with strong lift straight off launch but a tight landing, or a gentler beach launch from a small dune by the parking lot with a safer, more generous landing.

Getting there & local rules

From Cape Town, take the N2, then the Baden Powell Drive offramp and turn south; follow the road to the sea and turn left into the large parking area opposite Swartklip Road (M49). Landing is either cliff-top, in a small sandy patch or scrubby bush, or — the safer option — on the beach at the main parking lot. Only launch and land at the designated cliff or beach spots; the area is a sea-bird breeding ground.

Local rules & hazards

This site sits inside the Cape Town CTR and needs ATC permission to fly, usually capped around 300ft. Ideal wind is SSE to SSW at 18–24km/h; more easterly or westerly wind brings rolling rotor along the cliffs and weaker, more dangerous lift, and wind can strengthen quickly on hot afternoons. This is also a notorious crime hotspot — many local pilots have stopped flying here for that reason, so treat vehicle and personal safety as part of your planning.

Check conditions before you fly
