Where it is
Ebnerfeld is a mountain launch in East Tyrol, Austria, at about 1,376 m, with takeoff from an open meadow that has windsocks and room for two or three gliders to set up at once. Favorable wind comes from the southeast, south or southwest, and the terrain supports both thermic and soaring flying, with hikers reaching launch on foot as an alternative to driving. Getting up is straightforward by car, and a fixed-price taxi is available from the landing zone for groups of up to four. There's an important local rule here: a north or northwest föhn wind is a reason not to fly, not a condition to push through — it's specifically called out as a no-fly wind direction for this site. The landing area is large with several windsocks to read wind direction on the way in, but there are power lines to the south of it that pilots need to keep well clear of on approach. Because the site has specific local quirks, new pilots are expected to get a proper briefing before their first flight here rather than relying on general mountain-flying experience alone.
Launch & conditions
Takeoff is an open meadow with windsocks, space for two or three gliders at a time. Favorable wind is from the southeast, south or southwest.
Getting there & local rules
Reachable by car; a fixed-price taxi is available from the landing zone for up to four people. Launch can also be reached on foot.
Local rules & hazards
Do not fly when the wind is from the north or northwest (a föhn condition) — it's a no-fly direction at this site. Power lines lie just south of the landing area, so keep well clear of them on approach. Get a proper local briefing before your first flight here.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Ebnerfeld, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Ebnerfeld with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
