Wispile, above Saanen and Gstaad in Switzerland, is a well-regarded thermal and cross-country site that suits beginners as well as more experienced pilots, and it can fly as early as late winter or early spring when many other Alpine sites are still shut down. Launch has three separate take-off points that follow the sun and the wind: an east-facing one used in the morning, a west-facing one used after midday, and a north-facing one for bise (north/north-easterly) conditions. Access is by gondola up from Gstaad. The one thing every pilot needs to take seriously here is airspace: Saanen airport sits close by, and Swiss airspace rules are genuinely complex, so check the current restrictions before you fly rather than assuming. Landing is near the gondola station, though pilots should confirm the exact spot and windsock locally; cross-country pilots have plenty of open meadows to choose from, but should avoid any with long, uncut grass.
