Where it is

Soaring

Maitencillo sits right on the Chilean coast at 78 m, less than two hours from Santiago, and flies with wind from the southwest through west to northwest, a classic setup for coastal ridge soaring above the beach. There are two nearby launches to choose from along the same access road, giving pilots a bit of flexibility depending on wind strength and how busy the main site is. Landing is close to takeoff, near a stairway down to the beach, and there's also a steep direct track up to the second, higher launch for those who'd rather climb than fly between the two. Both take-off points allow top landing, which keeps things simple if conditions change mid-session. As a low-altitude coastal ridge, it rewards standard ridge-soaring discipline: fly the lift band, respect right-of-way with other wings, and treat strong onshore wind with the same caution you'd give any exposed coastal site.

Launch & conditions

There are two adjoining launches along the same access road; the higher one has more open ground than it used to, since nearby trees were cleared, giving more room for a top landing.

Getting there & local rules

Less than two hours' drive from Santiago; local signage points the way into Maitencillo, and the road continues on to the second, higher launch at its far end.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Maitencillo, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Maitencillo with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
