Where it is
Wittelsbacher Turm is a north-facing site above the Saale valley near Bad Kissingen, at 385 m, prized for genuine cross-country potential thanks to the open meadows below and the north-south valley running out from the hill; in a north wind it also soars well along the forest edge. It's still a lightly used site, with parking at both the launch and the landing field by the Arnshausen cemetery. The launch itself is difficult: a small, narrow lane start that only works in true north or north-northwest wind and never in a northeasterly, which throws rotor straight into the lane — wind socks at both the tower and the launch have to show the same direction before anyone commits. Only wings with a glide ratio of at least 1:6 are flown here, and launches happen strictly in a real, steady headwind rather than on a thermal release, since sinking out in the lane is a real risk. At least two visible wind indicators are mounted above the treetops along the side of the lane. The top landing field sits in the lee of the lift band and is reserved for emergencies only — it isn't the regular landing site.
Launch & conditions
A difficult, narrow lane launch: works only in true north or north-northwest wind, never northeasterly, which throws rotor into the lane. Wind socks at both the tower and the launch must agree before committing. Only wings with a glide ratio of at least 1:6 are flown here, launching strictly on a steady headwind rather than a thermal release.
Local rules & hazards
The top landing field sits in the lee of the lift band and is for emergencies only, not regular use. At least two visible wind indicators are mounted above the treetops along the lane, and a site briefing from the operator is required before flying.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Wittelsbacher Turm, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Wittelsbacher Turm with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
