Where it is
Algodonales–Poniente is one of the more welcoming launches in this well-known Andalusian flying area, with conditions that suit a wide range of pilots. Thermal activity is strong through summer, but the real appeal is the west-facing Poniente launch, which comes alive in the afternoon and evening once the morning Levante wind dies down — useful on days when other launches have gone quiet. Summer itself is brutal here, with temperatures climbing past 45°C in late June through early September, so the town empties of pilots exactly when you'd expect flying season to peak; spring and autumn are when Algodonales is genuinely lively, with several local schools running courses and tandem guiding. Reaching launch from town means following the A-384 west, turning off near the Cespa garage toward La Muela, then continuing on an unpaved but manageable track — hiking up from the Poniente landing zone, La Muela or Algodonales itself is also common.
Launch & conditions
Poniente launch sits at about 900m and works best in the afternoon and evening, once the morning Levante wind has died down and the westerly Poniente takes over.
Getting there & local rules
From Algodonales, take the A-384 heading west; turn off shortly after the Cespa garage toward La Muela, then follow the signed but unpaved track toward the launch sites — it's rough and narrow in places, so watch for oncoming vans. Hiking up from the Poniente landing zone, La Muela or Algodonales is also a common approach. The Poniente landing zone itself is tight, hemmed in by trees, the valley shape and power lines, so check the windsock and look around carefully before committing.
Check conditions before you fly
