Where it is
Peña Sobia launches from 1,325 m in Asturias, northern Spain, with an easy takeoff set about 60 m below the actual summit, working southwest and west wind for thermic, cross-country and hike-and-fly flying. Getting there is the real challenge of the day: from San Martín de Teverga, the road toward the Ventana pass leads to San Salvador, where a left-hand detour reaches the village of Carrea. From there, a 4x4 track climbs to around 1,350 m — a genuinely complicated stretch, with steep grades and one section in particularly poor condition, so a capable vehicle and a careful driver matter here. Pilots leave the car around that elevation and finish the approach on foot, a roughly 15-minute walk to reach the launch itself. The reward for the drive is a straightforward, easy takeoff once you're there, which makes this a site where the access is the technical part and the flying itself is comparatively forgiving.

Getting there & local rules

Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Pena Sobia, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Pena Sobia with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
