Where it is

ThermalsSoaringHike & fly

Rodiezmo is a soaring site above the León side of the Cordillera Cantábrica in Spain, right near the Asturias border, where the standout condition is a laminar north wind that flies easily, especially after 6pm. Takeoff itself is straightforward — a good slope, best from areas with less scrub — but reaching it takes a genuine 20-minute walk up from the village's water tank, on a route without a clearly marked trail. The best days here come from a foehn effect off the mountains opposite, particularly when it descends from the northern Pajares range; when west wind dominates instead, the valley turns notably turbulent, so that's a condition to treat with caution. Landing is flexible, with several meadows along the path back to the village — just pick one without tall grass — or right near the water tank itself; don't cut your final approach too fine, since a small valley just before the landing zone eats a surprising amount of altitude on the way in.

Launch & conditions

Takeoff is on a good, straightforward slope — look for areas with less scrub for the cleanest run. It's a genuine 20-minute walk up from the village's water tank, with no clearly marked trail.

Getting there & local rules

From the village, a good path leads to the water tank; from there it's about 20–30 minutes on foot up to takeoff. By road, take the N-620 (Asturias–León) and exit at Villamanín toward Rodiezmo-Casares.

Local rules & hazards

The best conditions come from a foehn effect off the mountains opposite, especially descending from the northern Pajares range. When west wind dominates instead, the valley turns notably turbulent — treat that as a caution sign. Don't cut your final approach too fine: a small valley just before landing eats a surprising amount of altitude.

Check conditions before you fly

A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Rodiezmo, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Rodiezmo with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
