Where it is
Siete Pilillas is a thermal and soaring launch above Pegalajar in Jaén, Spain, at around 930 m, flying with winds from the north, northeast and northwest. The take-off itself is very nicely prepared and easy to use — but the mountain forms a venturi, so any wind that's already a bit strong gets squeezed and accelerated right at launch. Treat a moderate forecast wind with real caution here rather than judging conditions by feel alone. The site sits at the high point of the road between Pegalajar and Mancha Real, almost like a small mountain pass, which makes it simple to find and reach. Landing is well organized: the main LZ is down in Mancha Real, which also gives the site its name, with a bail-out LZ available if needed, and pilots also sometimes land back near take-off itself. With a well-prepared ramp and flexible landing options, Siete Pilillas is a solid, easy-access site for pilots who respect what the venturi effect can do to wind on a stronger day.
