Where it is
Escalette is a technical soaring site above the Provençal coast near Marseille, launching at 587 m from a very short strip of rocky, dry ground where pilots take off facing their wing rather than the usual way. That launch position doesn't point directly at the landing field, so climbing out relies on reading the local dynamic wind correctly — advice from pilots already flying there is the standard way to learn it. The site only works in south or southwest wind, and any other direction is best avoided; it's known as an excellent late-afternoon soaring spot, with regulars typically meeting at the parking area around 5:30pm in summer. Reaching launch means parking at 'Parking de l'En Chois', following the red-marked trail toward 'Pas de l'Escalette', then turning left about 200 m before that point — marked by white fences along the trail — onto an off-trail path for roughly 150 m to the takeoff; it's not an easy spot to find alone the first time, though other wings in the air usually give it away. The landing field is equally something to learn locally: a sloping patch among olive trees that's worth walking and checking out before ever committing to fly.
Launch & conditions
The takeoff is short, on rocky, dry ground, and pilots launch facing their wing; the position doesn't point directly at the landing field, so reading the local dynamic wind correctly is what gets you there.
Getting there & local rules
Park at 'Parking de l'En Chois' and follow the red-marked trail toward 'Pas de l'Escalette'; about 200 m before it, where white fences line the trail, turn left onto an off-trail path for roughly 150 m to reach takeoff.
Local rules & hazards
This is considered a technical, end-of-day soaring site that only works in south or southwest wind — any other direction should be avoided.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Escalette, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Escalette with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
