Garlaban

Garlaban rises east of Aubagne, at the western end of the Massif de la Sainte-Baume behind Marseille — Marcel Pagnol country, with the ochre limestone crests and pine that inspired his novels. Take-offs are short but present no particular difficulties, and the site is set up for local flying (east to south orientation), typically in the middle of the morning before the south-west sea breeze rolls in around midday and shuts things down. The access to the launches is on foot only — 40 minutes from the parking; vehicle access to landing is strictly forbidden. A quiet zone protecting a Bonelli's eagle territory sits 5 km east near Gémenos, which does not restrict local flying but is a place to be aware of.

Short take-offs without particular difficulty. Site orientation is east to south. Best in the middle of the morning before the sea breeze returns.

Getting there & local rules

On the A501 (Marseille–Aix via Aubagne), exit at 7, join the big roundabout and take the D96 for about 100 m. Take the Chemin des Solans to a small roundabout, turn left to stay on the Chemin des Solans, and follow it to the end of the paved section. A dirt DFCI track on the right leads to a dirt parking area with two large green tanks — stop here and read the Site information panel (car park at N43°19'27.67'' E5°33'31.93''). Access to the launches is on foot only, ~40 minutes. Vehicle access to the landing is strictly forbidden.

Local rules & hazards

A prefectoral decree regulates access to the Bouches-du-Rhône hills between 1 June and 30 September — in orange periods access is free; in red, access is limited to 06:00–11:00; in black, all entry is strictly forbidden and fined. Flights are still possible during hunting season except on game-release days (check the calendar at the site information panel). The site is inside the Marseille Provence 6 TMA, ceiling limited to 1,370 m (4,500 ft). Wind directions: dangerous in N, NW, NE and westerlies; favourable in east, ESE, SSE and SSW. The SW sea breeze returns around midday and makes flying turbulent and inadvisable.
