Where it is
Clara launches from the top of a hill approached from its south side, reached from Millstreet Town by driving toward Macroom for 3-4 km, turning right at a small square castle, then following the road another 3 km to a final right turn — the gate here has an old sign asking visitors to close it, but it should always be left open. A short drive further leads to grassy parking near two gateposts, and from there it's about a 20-minute walk up through the fields to launch. Always walk to the top first to check the true wind strength and direction before committing. Top landing is possible and fairly simple, though there's a single electricity wire marked by poles right at the summit to watch for. Stay below 5,500 feet, and be ready for wind that can build strength quickly in this part of Ireland — the speed bar is worth having ready. Landing is in the small fields below the hill, to the north or west of the road, since the ground between the road and the mountain itself is too steep; expect telephone wires beside the road, and avoid any field with horses or cattle in it.
Launch & conditions
Takeoff is at the top of the hill — you have to walk up. Always check the true wind strength and direction from the summit before committing. Top landing is possible and fairly simple, but watch for a single electricity wire marked by poles right at the top.
Getting there & local rules
From Millstreet Town, drive toward Macroom for 3-4 km and turn right at a small square castle just off the road. Follow that road 3 km to a final right turn — there's an old sign asking you to close the gate there, but it should always stay open. Continue 500 m to grassy parking near two gateposts, then walk up through the fields, about 20 minutes, through a small gate near the top.
Local rules & hazards
Stay below 5,500 feet. Wind here can build strength quickly, so always be ready to use the speed bar.
Check conditions before you fly
A forecast for the valley is not a forecast for the launch. Before heading to Clara, read the wind and thermals for the site itself, confirm the day's rules with the local club, and remember the standing rule — when in doubt, don't launch. In the free OutDare app you can open Clara with a 7-day forecast built from high-resolution weather models, see who else has been flying, and get there with offline maps.
