Capaccio

Capaccio is one of the symbols of free flight in southern Campania and Lucania, a site that has been active for over 20 years. The 227 m launch works on S, SW, W and NW winds and offers just about every flight type available: dynamic soaring, spring thermal flying, beginner-friendly conditions, cross-country departure point, and tandem passenger flights with panoramic views from Capri, along the Amalfi coast and back to the Cilento mountains. The launch dominates the vast plain of the Sele, which is full of fields and open landing options, so landing pressure is unusually low for a Mediterranean site. The official landing sits near the source of the Capodifiume river, a water park with free entry that also makes a pleasant post-flight stop.

West-facing 227 m launch with wide wind window (S to NW). In dynamics, soaring is easy and top-landings are possible in the right conditions. The site accommodates beginners under instruction as well as XC and tandem flights, making it a good all-round venue for the region.

Getting there & local rules

Follow signs to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Granato toward Capaccio village (not Capaccio Scalo). Park at the church square where you can look out over the wall to see the take-off and windsock. The official landing is at the Capodifiume river source — a water park with free entry, useful for families or a cool-off in hot weather.

Local rules & hazards

The site's real strength is its landing options — the take-off dominates the plain of the Sele with fields and free ground as far as the eye can see, so bombs-outs and out-landings are unusually low-stress for the region.
